Photography began for me as a small child when the “gang” of the neighborhood gathered together in my family basement to develop a roll of film. The details of that experience are lost but not the feeling of wonder that occurred when looking at those small negatives hanging on a clothes line to dry.

In those days, we had only a small contact printer frame, placing the negative on the glass, closing the lid, and having a small light come on creating some sort of magical unknown to make a very small print.

From that time forward I fell in love with black and white photography and that love affair continues to this day.

It was years before I really had an opportunity to learn about the craft of making negatives and fine prints, as classes, workshops or opportunities to learn from knowledgeable people was not common in the 50’s and 60’s. So perhaps this struggle of self learning left its mark in such a way to help lead me into my grand passion of educating others into the skill and craft of producing photographs.

My personal work is done primary with 35mm film or 2 ¼ film, although, I have large format experience I find the subject matter I am drawn to requires quick responses to the light and local conditions which change quickly. It is the small day to day forms that pique my interest.

The role as an educator of photography processes has lead to a variety of experimental journeys into other areas of photography. I feel that it is a part of my role to lead my students into areas to find their own vision and passions by example as well as with thought.
